This series of posts explores how engineers and technical people can help achieve ‘Net Zero by 2050’ goals. But, before discussing specific technical topics such as solar and wind power, it is useful to back up and consider the intellectual environment in which this work is being carried out. This will help us avoid pursuing technologies that are not fundamentally feasible, or that cannot be realistically implemented at scale in the short amount of time available to us.
One idea that can help guide us is what the concept of Hegelian Synthesis. It is true that the writings of the philosopher Georg Hegel (1770-1831) are obscure, even by the standards of the German philosophers of his time. Nevertheless, it is worth thinking about what he can teach us.
