Need for Sustainable Aviation Fuels

This post is the first in a series to do with Sustainable Aviation Fuels.


One of the industries most challenged by Net Zero goals is civil aviation. As little as 50 years ago flying was a means of transport that only the rich could afford. Now, it is taken for granted that people with normal incomes can fly across continents and oceans for business and pleasure. This change came about for two reasons. First, the technology improved. Airplanes could safely carry more people at higher speeds. The second reason was that aviation fuel was abundant and cheap. The fact that airplanes emit substantial amounts of greenhouse gases was not considered to be important until recently.

However, the economic background for civil aviation is becoming more challenging for the following reasons.
