The following is from NPR:
Climate change will be a lesser priority in Florida and largely disappear from state statutes under legislation signed Wednesday by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis that also bans power-generating wind turbines offshore or near the state's lengthy coastline.
King Knut: A Humble Man
The report reminded me of the famous story/legend to do with King Knut (Canute) and the waves.
In the early 11th century Knut was king of England, Denmark, and Norway. He was known for his administrative skills and military prowess. According to the legend, he tired of his courtiers’ excessive flattery. Therefore, to demonstrate the limits of his power, he decided to teach them a lesson.
He ordered his throne to be placed close to the shore as the tide came in. He sat on the throne and ordered the sea to stop approaching, and not to wet his feet. Inevitably, despite his commands, the tide did come in and his feet did get wet.
Knut used this event to point out to his courtiers that kings have no power over the natural world. In spite of his success and power, Knut was a humble man.
The same cannot be said with respect to the governor and legislators of the State of Florida.
Florida
The insurance companies do not share DeSantis’ arrogance. The following is from the USA Today Network for Florida.
Home insurance rates are expected, on average, to increase 6 percent in 2024 but could jump as high as 23 percent in states with severe weather.
With Florida property owners already paying more than four times the national average for home insurance, there is good reason to be nervous.
Early forecasts for a hyperactive 2024 Atlantic hurricane season could bring even more rate increases in 2025. AccuWeather is predicting an "explosive" hurricane season that has the potential to break the all-time record of 30 named storms in a season.
